Eleven years ago I landed my first nonprofit job providing wellness services, like yoga and meditation, inside prisons, hospitals, and rehabilitation centers. showing up for this work wasn’t just rewarding… it was healing for me. I knew early in my career that my “ikigai,” or my passion that brings value and joy to my life, would be centered in social impact work.
As I grew more invested in my social impact career, I also witnessed a growing disconnection--not just in me, but with many of my peers. I noticed some of the most passionate and dedicated social impact professionals experiencing concerning levels of stress, burnout and overwhelm. As demands for social impact services increased (and continue to increase), I watched people continue to compromise their needs… all for the greater good of others in need. I witnessed organizational leaders remain speechless in conversations about how they can support and retain their staff while ensuring that organizational goals were being met. The very thing that was healing us was also compromising our well-being.
I believe that social impact organizations aren’t just responsible for meeting the needs of their communities. They are also responsible for meeting the needs of the dedicated employees who show up every day for the work. Voicing this truth has led to my passion and purpose: helping social impact professionals do good and be well.
We all must consider not a double, but triple bottom line in the social impact sector: Let’s ensure that our organizations are financially stable (1), continue to have a positive impact in our community (2), and make sure our people feel well-resourced, well-supported, and well-connected (3). Let’s take care of us, so we can take better care of our community, together.
